Shouldn't We First Look Inward Before Seeking External Help for Indonesia's IT Security?

Gambar
I just read that Indonesia Considers Assistance from 10 Countries to Overcome Cyberattack on National Data Center:   The head of Indonesia's Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN), Hinsa Siburian, admitted that his office had difficulties in overcoming the cyberattack on the temporary national data center managed by the Ministry of Communications (Kominfo), which has been ongoing since June 20, 2024.   "It was difficult in the beginning because all the data was encrypted, so we faced difficulties in forensics. But fortunately, some data could be analyzed and the process is still ongoing," Hinsa said during a meeting with House Commission I and Kominfo in Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday, June 27.   In this case, the hackers demanded a ransom of US$8 million or Rp. 131 billion. But the BSSN said it could not yet catch the culprit because it had just discovered the clues and was still waiting for forensic results.   House of Representatives Commission I member...

Hospital Security in Question 3

Gambar
On June 14, 2024, in my article titled "Hospital Security in Question 2", I reported a ransomware attack that took place on June 3, 2024, targeting Synnovis, a pathology services provider for hospitals in Southeast London. This attack led to the cancellation of more than 200 "critical" operations scheduled within 24 hours following the incident by London NHS hospitals, including Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust (GSTT) and King’s College University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. We now learn that the perpetrators of this attack have published sensitive data they had stolen online. Additionally, 20,000 blood samples had to be destroyed as a result of this incident. Between June 10 and 16, the second week after the attack, over 320 planned operations, some of them urgent, and 1,294 outpatient appointments had still to be postponed at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. On May 1, 2024, I had publishe...

The Security of Hospitals in Question 2

Gambar
The Security of Hospitals in Question 2 On May 29, I published an article titled "The Security of Hospitals in Question" 1 . In it, I described the hospital as a supply chain, an integrated system that brings together various stakeholders of an economic activity, from producer to consumer. I noted that hospitals use various interconnected IT systems such as electronic medical records (EMRs), laboratory management systems, prescription systems, and medical imaging management systems (PACS). These systems collaborate with numerous partners and suppliers, facilitating the circulation of sensitive data between different actors. A Multidimensional Approach to Security To protect hospitals against cyber threats, I recommended adopting a multidimensional approach that includes technical, organizational, and awareness measures. Segmentation and Specific APIs I advocated for network segmentation, with each department having its own API (Application Programming Interface)...
